Role Reversal

By Howard G. Chua-Eoan/Reported by Jeannie Park

In 1946, in David Lean's classic film of Dickens' Great
Expectations, Jean Simmons played the young Estella to Martita
Hunt's spurned Miss Havisham, the brooding harridan in a
tattered wedding dress who teaches her ward to hate men. This
July, in a startling reversal of roles, Simmons, 60, will play
the spinster in a Disney Channel mini-series. "Oh, yes," says
Simmons, "it was kind of weird. But when they started putting
the makeup on, and the wig and the dress, you get into it."
Simmons, who once suffered from agoraphobia, says she can
identify a little with the reclusive Havisham. But that's as far
as it goes.
